FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
25 August 1998
Lobby for Human Rights in Jerusalem
As Israel continues its policy of ethnic cleansing in 1967 occupied East Jerusalem, the 25 Palestinian families - all of them victims of Israeli house demolitions, ID card confiscations, and impediments against the construction of housing - celebrate the first anniversary of their protest camp "SUMOUD".
The Lobby for Human Rights in Jerusalem, deeply concerned with and working for the defense of the Palestinian right to its capital Jerusalem, has accompanied the people of SUMOUD in their struggle. We congratulate the people of SUMOUD for their endurance and steadfastness and will stay with SUMOUD until their right to live in their hometown Jerusalem is secured.
We call upon the broad public and press to join us on SUMOUD's first birthday, which we will commemorate in a POPULAR ARTS FESTIVAL in the SUMOUD compound in Sheikh Jarrah on 26 August 1998.
We consider our festival part and parcel of the Campaign for the Defense of Jerusalem launched by the Popular Committee for Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Disaster of the Palestinian People, and wish to extend our greetings and support to all those who stand up in defense of Palestinian Jerusalem.
We demand:
- STOP ID CARD CONFISCATIONS AND HOUSE DEMOLITIONS IN JERUSALEM
- STOP THE MILITARY CLOSURE OF JERUSALEM
- RAPID HOUSING SOLUTIONS IN JERUSALEM FOR THE PEOPLE OF SUMOUD
- THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE HAS A RIGHT TO DEVELOP ITS CAPITAL JERUSALEM!
