BADIL at UNHRC #60, Item 7: Every State has the Legal Responsibility to Impose Sanctions

1/10/2025

On 30 September, at the 60th regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, BADIL Resource Center provided an oral statement under item 7, re-affirming every member state’s obligation to impose sanctions to stop the Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip.

BADIL reminded member states that the obligation to prevent and stop genocide is binding on all states, individually and collectively; and cannot be replaced by recognition or declarations, nor excused by lack of consensus or majority.

Imposing sanctions does not require the approval of the UN Security Council, nor a provision by the International Court of Justice.

The imposition of political, economic and military sanctions is not a hostile act, but the legal responsibility of each and every state, and the most effective measure to stop Israeli genocide and international crimes.
