BADIL implements the Second Al Awda Training School: “Colonialism and the People”

As a continuation for the First Al Awda Training School for the current year, which discussed “The Land and The People”, BADIL - Resource Center for Palestinian Residency and Refugee Rights, implemented the Second Al Awda School, on Friday 16 June 2023, for 3 continuous days in the presence of 32 participants (16 females, 16 males) from Mandatory Palestine.

This school discussed the impact of colonialism on people: their existence, rights, and awareness, through multiple workshops and lectures that delved into the concept of the Ongoing Nakba and the coercive environment, the rights of refugees, the policies of de-Palestinianizing them and normalization in a colonial context. The participants also had two separate workshops with Adameer and former prisoner Ameer Hazboun to talk about types of detention, investigation, the rights of prisoners, and the conditions of the Palestinian prisoners in the prisons of the Israeli colonial-apartheid regime.

As a way to connect the participants in the public political sphere, the participants visited the home of Omar Hajajleh in Al-Walajah village, who represents a model for resisting and confronting Israeli forcible displacement policies and attempts to seize his land. Also, a field visit took place in the Old City of Hebron to experience and learn more about the Israeli colonial policies and practices there, the Israeli military bases dividing the city, and the economic situation.

To encourage participants to return to voluntary work and to connect them with the Palestinian community, a volunteer day was carried out at the Palestinian Martyrs' Cemetery in Irtas village in Bethlehem. The participants cleaned the cemetery's courtyards and planted roses around the graves of the martyrs.

Al Awda Training Schools are an essential part of the youth programs implemented by BADIL, aiming to enhance cohesion between Palestinian youth in Mandatory Palestine, in addition to empowering youth with the skills and knowledge necessary to raise their voices on the rights of the Palestinian people, especially the rights of the displaced.
