BADIL Resource Center conducts the fourth session of the 'Palestinian Women's Stories' project on creative writing and storytelling

BADIL Resource Center for Palestinian Residency and Refugee Rights conducted the fourth session of the "Palestinian Women's Stories" project on Friday, 10 February 2023, in partnership with 6 Palestinian organizations in Mandatory Palestine and Lebanon. The project included 25 female participants (18-29 years old) who are interested in the fields of media, writing, and storytelling.

The fourth session of the project featured a workshop on creative writing and storytelling, hosted by the Palestinian writer Ziad Khaddash. The writer presented his perspective on creative writing and its impact on preserving national identity. He then encouraged the participants to write short stories by presenting real-life Palestinian events and stories, which were then translated into short narrative texts. He also reviewed a selection of literary texts, including Ghassan Kanafani’s “The Death of Bed Number 12”, as creative examples. The workshop aimed to stimulate the participants’ reading habits and enhance their writing abilities, aligning with the project's goal of producing a booklet containing stories of Palestinian women’s real struggle, written by the participating young women.

The project primarily aims to enhance the presence of women in the public sphere and activate their participation in political, social, and economic life by highlighting the stories of Palestinian women, showcasing their lives with all their complexities and simplicity. The project also aims to strengthen the capacities of women in the fields of media, short story narration, and documentation. After completing the training phase, the participants will work together to produce a booklet containing 10-15 distinctive stories of Palestinian women from various regions, reflecting their diverse social, political, and economic contexts. The significance of this project stems from the necessity to spotlight Palestinian women, especially as essential actors in the liberation movement, particularly given their political and social marginalization.

This project is part of BADIL's strategy, which aims to empower rights holders, especially women and youth who are marginalized, with the necessary tools and skills to amplify their voices and their struggles as Palestinians and women.
