BADIL calls on the UNHRC to end Israel’s colonial-apartheid regime and suppression of Palestinian Resistance

During the ongoing General Debate of the 54th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), BADIL Resource Center for Palestinian Residency and Refugee Rights has urgently brought attention to Israel's policy of suppressing Palestinian resistance. In an oral statement presented at the UNHRC under item 4, BADIL outlined key areas where Israel's illegal actions have resulted in the violation of the Palestinian right to resist, as enshrined by international law and called upon the Council to take practical measures.

BADIL highlighted the following examples of Israel’s policy of suppression of Palestinian resistance:

  • Under the false pretext of selfdefense and counter-terrorism, Israel has escalated its practices of terrorizing, maiming, and willful killing of protected people. Mass and unjustified destruction of civilian property and the forcible transfer of thousands of Palestinians, including Palestinian refugees, have occurred in regions such as Jenin, Nablus, Aqbat Jaber, Gaza, and other areas within Palestine.
  • Israel's suppression of resistance extends even to Palestinians with Israeli citizenship, particularly the youth who participated in popular demonstrations and protests during the Unity Intifada of May 2021. These young Palestinians are being subjected to excessively long and discriminatory sentences, ranging from 7 to 10 years of imprisonment.
  • The Israeli policy of suppression also targets Palestinian prisoners who are subjected to arbitrary, ill, and cruel treatment. This inhumane treatment is exemplified by the continued arbitrary detention of Palestinian nationals like Walid Daqqah and Asif Rifae'. Both are suffering from terminal cancer and are being denied access to adequate medical attention and early release, despite numerous appeals for their humanitarian release.

The suppression of Palestinian resistance is a central aspect of Israel's strategy to maintain dominance over the Palestinian people as a whole. The international community must take practical and immediate measures to put an end to Israel's colonial-apartheid regime and the policy of the suppression of resistance.
