BADIL announces the launch of the 2015 AL-AWDA AWARD

“Return is our Right and our Will”

Registration is now open for the ninth Al-Awda Award
Al-Awda Award is part of BADIL’s efforts to promote the rights of Palestinian refugees and to highlight the ongoing displacement of the Palestinian people for the past 66 years.

2015 Al-Awda Award categories:
1. The Best Nakba Commemoration Poster
2. The Best Short Documentary
3. The Best Photograph
4. The Best Children Story

Deadline for submission in all categories: Friday, 17 April 2015

General Rules and Regulations:
The following provisions and clarifications apply to all categories. Please also refer to the specific rules and regulations to each category:

  1. Participants must adhere to the rules and regulations for the competition category in which they wish to participate;
  2. Participation is open to Palestinians and non-Palestinians alike;
  3. Submissions must be original and previously unpublished;
  4. Any entry containing discriminatory symbols or expressions based on race, gender or religion or any other, will be excluded from the competition;
  5. Participants can only submit one entry in each category, but may participate in more than one category;
  6. BADIL will publish the winning entries, either as separate publications or within BADIL's regular publications, as specified for each category;
  7. Al-Awda Award is judged by an independent and professional jury. BADIL and the participants are obliged to accept the decision and recommendations of the jury;
  8. BADIL reserves the right to keep, use, edit and publish all submissions at its discretion, while respecting the intellectual property rights of the participants;
  9. Entries submitted after the deadline will be excluded, even if sent by mail.
  10. All submissions should include: a Curriculum Vitae and contact information (including address, phone number and email address);
  11. Submissions can be delivered in one of the following ways:

Category 1: Al-Awda Award for the best Nakba Commemoration Poster

The best Nakba commemoration Poster for this year must focus on the determination of the Palestinian refugees and internally displaced persons to achieve their right of return to their homes. The poster should reflect this determination and the challenging spirit of the different generations. The poster should express the inevitability of return as the solution.

Specific Rules and Regulations:
The General Rules and Regulations are integral to the Specific Rules and Regulations.
Any written text on the poster should be in Arabic.
The poster must be original and unpublished previously, with a clear and original message;
Posters submitted in previous Al-Awda Award contests will not be accepted;
Use CMYK color printing settings for graphically designed posters;
Submissions will not be returned to the artists;
The poster can be hand drawn or graphically designed, and can be in color or black and white.
Posters must be on A3 canvas (300mm X 420mm) in high resolution (at least 300 DPI) and saved as (.psd), (.jpg) or (.gif) file.

Value of the Award:
First Place: 1500 US Dollars
Second Place: 750 US Dollars
Third Place: 500 US Dollars

In addition, BADIL will:
Print 40,000 copies of the winning poster. The poster will be distributed in historic Palestine and all countries participating in the Nakba commemoration events.
Organize an exhibition of the best posters.
Announce up to ten honorable mentions at the 2015 Al-Awda Award Ceremony.

Category 2: Al-Awda Award for the Best Short Documentary.

The short documentary should document testimonies of at least three first-generation refugees, men and women, who witnessed the Nakba. The documentary needs to focus on their life before, during, and the first years after the Nakba.

Specific Rules and Regulations:
The General Rules and Regulations are integral to the Specific Rules and Regulations;
The short documentary should be between five to seven minutes long.
The language of the film should be Arabic, in case you have an interview in English it should be translated into Arabic subtitles;
The short documentary can be produced by individuals, groups or organizations.
The purpose of this film is a documentation and historical research. It should not contain anything fictional;
Any use or quotation of parts from other films or productions must be to be mentioned with explicit approval of their owners.
Submissions will not be returned to the participants.

Value of the Award:
First Place: 1500 US Dollars
Second Place: 1000 US Dollars
Third Place: 500 US Dollars

BADIL will also:

Announce up to ten honorable mentions at the 2015 Al-Awda Award Ceremony.
Promote the best ten films in the activities and programs of BADIL locally and internationally.


Category 3: Al- Awda Award for the Best Photograph

The photography should focus on one of the following topics: manifestations of the ongoing Nakba, the continuing violations of the rights of the Palestinian people, and resisting Israeli displacement policies. These policies include denial of residency; installment of a permit regime; land confiscation and denial of use; discriminatory zoning and planning; segregation; denial of natural resources and access to services; denial of refugee return; suppression of resistance.

Specific Rules and Regulations:
The General Rules and Regulations are integral to the Specific Rules and Regulations;
The participant can only send one photograph;
The photograph can be in color or in black and white;
The photograph cannot be edited, unless attached with it the original photo;
The photograph cannot include any text printed on it;
The photograph should be in a high resolution (at least 300dpi), to be sent in (jpg) file;
The photograph will not be returned to the participant;
Photographs should be sent by email as separate attachments. Participants should also attach a Word Document with a brief caption (no more than 30 words) describing the photograph (time, place, people, description, etc. as appropriate).

Value of the Award:
First Place: 750 US Dollars
Second Place: 500 US Dollars
Third Place: 250 US Dollars

BADIL will also:
Print and publish the winning photograph in BADIL’s different publications,
Announce up to ten honorable mentions at the 2015 Al-Awda Award Ceremony.
Organize a mobile exhibition for the winning photos.

 

Category 4: Al- Awda Award for the Best Children Story

The theme of the children’s story is enhancing the children's understanding of their rights, focusing on one of the following rights: the right to life, the right to identity and citizenship, the right to safety and security. For details about the meaning of these rights, please review the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Specific Rules and Regulations:
The General Rules and Regulations are integral to the Specific Rules and Regulations;
The short story should target children between the age of seven and ten;
The story should be in standard Arabic;
The story should be between 250 – 300 words;
The original copies will not be returned to the participants;
The winning stories will be edited before publishing.
Stories should be submitted as Word files (.doc).

Value of the Award:
First Place: 1000 US Dollars
Second Place: 750 US Dollars
Third Place: 500 US Dollars

BADIL will also:
Publish the first three winning stories.
Give each winner 50 printed copies of their story.
Announce up to ten honorable mentions at the 2015 Al-Awda Award Ceremony.
