BADIL launches its 13th working paper, “Palestinian National Identity: Formation Particularity and Defining Framework”

Al-Bireh, 3 June 2012 - BADIL launches its 13th working paper, “Palestinian National Identity: Formation Particularity and Defining Framework”. Authors, discussants and participants pointed to the transitory nature of national identity, highlighting the fragility of Palestinian national discourse in the past decade.

The working paper comes in an effort to both identify the factors that determine the evolution of Palestinian national identity, and its components, on the one hand, and to transcend the theoretical-academic debate on the issue, aiming to increase public and popular awareness, on the other.

The discussion revolved mainly around the following points:
• The importance of this study in identifying the main factors that influence the evolution of Palestinian national identity;
• The need to expand this study to incorporate additional dimensions of national identity – such as its manifestations in literature, arts and culture;
• The ways in which we can put this knowledge in practical use within Palestinian national emancipation.

Facilitated by BADIL, the workshop hosted the authors, Abd Al-Fattah Al-Qalqili and Ahmad Abu Al-Ghush, two discussants, Ali Jaradat (writer and political activist) and Dr. Ahmad Rafiq Awad (novelist and lecturer), as well as an audience of academics and activists.

An Arabic version of the working paper is available on our website: http://www.badil.org/en/documents/category/2-working-papers

An English brief of the working paper is being prepared by BADIL, and will be published in the coming weeks.
