PR/EN/170317/20

On 16 March 2017, within the 'Justice, Dignity and Sustainable Peace are only possible with the implementation of UN Resolution 194' campaign, the Global Palestinian Refugee Network (GPRN) organized an awareness raising event in commemoration of Israeli Apartheid week. The event, which was attended by Palestinian refugees, activists, and representatives of civil society organizations, aimed to shed light on the Israeli regime of apartheid on both sides of the green line and in the diaspora.

The event took place in Aida Refugee Camp and participation was secured via online media mechanisms (Skype and live streaming). Palestinian refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) participated from five different locations; Jerusalem, Nazareth, the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, and Bethlehem. GPRN member organizations included: from Bethlehem, Beit Atfal Assumoud Community Organization in Burj Al-shamali Refugee Camp in Lebanon; Burj al-Luqluq Social Center Society and the Youth Development Department (YDD) in Jerusalem; the Association for the Defense of the Rights of the Internally Displaced in Nazareth; as well as the Al-Tawasol Forum Society, Al-Karmel Center,  the Popular Committee of Al-Maghazi Refugee Camp, the Association for Culture, Arts, and Popular Heritage from the Gaza Strip.

During the event, a representative organization from each location highlighted the impact of the Israeli apartheid regime on Palestinians in their communities and in general.

This event was one out of a series of events and activities of the GPRN campaign; more events are planned for the whole year. The event was designed to give Palestinians the space to raise their voices, highlight the specificities of their situation
