(7 April 1999) Campaign to End ID Card Confiscation (CALL TO ACTION)

CALL TO ACTION:

The Campaign to End ID Card Confiscation will hold a demonstration at the park near New Gate (corner of Jaffa st. and road no. 1) at 3:30pm on Wednesday, April 14 along with PLC and Knesset members.  The Campaign was initiated by Palestinian and Israeli human rights organizations to pressure the Israeli High Court as it prepares to pass its decision on the “legality” of Jerusalem ID card confiscation on April 22.

The policy of ID card confiscation is the Israeli governments most effective policy of ethnic cleansing in Jerusalem and has already forcefully evicted and separated thousands of Palestinian families.  The Campaign on the April 14 will use banners and stickers with the phrase, “Bibi, you were abroad for 12 years. Now it’s your turn!”  above a forged Netanyahu ID Card with the word “expired” stamped across it.  The slogan, written in English, Arabic, and Hebrew, is a reference to the 1996 “center of life” policy which allowed for a 600% increase in the number of ID card confiscations.

The Campaign calls for an immediate end to the policy of ID card confiscation, to reinstate the status of those Palestinians whose residency rights were revoked, and to allow Palestinian families to be re-united.
